Fitting Room

Welcome to the Virtual Fitting Room at Tracey’s Boutique.

It is my pleasure to help you size your hat properly, so that it fits your head the way you want it to. Whenever possible, I would like the opportunity to custom fit your hat to your head.

The following page will help you take measurements and determine yours or your child's head size. You will need a soft measuring tape to complete this task.

Head sizes can differ greatly. Most often, head sizes will fall into the average range, but in order to ensure your hat will fit properly, it's best to take measurements.

Head Sizes (Average Head Size/Circumference):
0 - 3 months         13" - 14" inches
3 - 6 months         14" - 17" inches
6 - 12 months       16" - 19" inches
1 - 3 Years           18" - 20" inches
3 - 10 Years          19" - 21" inches
11 Years - Teens    20 1/2" - 22" inches
Women                 21 1/2" - 22 1/2" inches
Men                      23" - 24" inches

I've heard suggested that crochet hats should be 1" - 1 1/2" inches smaller than your actual head size. That may be true in some cases, but it is not true in all cases. Neither is it so that a hat size should necessarily be the same size as the head size. All depending on the style of the hat, it should fit a little roomier or a little snugger.

Smaller stitches = less stretch
Bigger (longer) stitches or spacing between stitches = more stretch.

That's why you are more than welcome to contact me regarding sizing if you are unsure. I want your hat to fit just right!

HOW TO MEASURE YOUR HEAD:

First, you will need to measure your head CIRCUMFERENCE. Circumference is the distance/length around a closed curve. Typically, hats sit just above the middle of your forehead in the front. At the back, your hat sits at the nape of your neck, which is the bottom hairline at the back of your neck. To measure the circumference of your head, wrap the measuring tape around your head with the tape going around the middle of your forehead, just above the top of your ear, to the nape of your neck and back up to the middle of your forehead. DO NOT PULL THE MEASURING TAPE TOO TIGHT OR YOUR HAT WILL FIT TIGHT ON YOUR HEAD.

Second, you will need to take your EAR TO EAR measurement. Place measuring tape against your head at the top edge of your ear and go directly over/across the top of your head to the top edge of the opposite ear.

TIP: If you have a hat at home that fits well, you can use it as a guideline. Put it on and see where it rests on your head. Take note of where it sits on your forehead and at the nape of your neck and then measure your head.

Please measure carefully when preparing to order your hat.
Take your measurements 2 - 3 times to ensure accuracy. Write your measurement down right away, before you forget.

Round your measurement to the nearest 1/4" inch. Please round your measurements UP, not down.

What is a correct hat fit? Whatever feels right and comfortable to you. There is no "correct" hat size for you. It is totally a matter of personal preference. A tighter fitting hat stays on better when the wind is blowing (I live in Saskatchewan, and it can get pretty windy here). A looser fitting hat is more comfortable. A newsboy/newsgirl hat should fit a little snugger than a sunhat. Crocheted hats are quite stretchy and very durable, so if sized right, can fit for a long time.

I am here to help. After you have measured your head and decided on the hat you would like to order, contact me to discuss.
